fyi...

In our GIS data:

in this file are excel sheets that explain all of the data field abbreviations for those corresponding shape files.

  1. Also, I just learned that under metadata is an xml file that leads you to interactive data field descriptions (if there is no excel file.) Often attribute tables have numbers 1=yes 2=no #=unavailable, and other random numbers that seem to have a pattern; these metadata folders with their xml files explain all these codes and abbreviations. For access, open the metadata file outside of GIS (as if you're opening a regular file) and the files inside should specify the type of browser you use (firefox, chrome, internet explorer.)
